ALAMOSA, CO - The Wes Lavong Invitational took place Saturday at the Adams State University High Altitude Training Center where high level competition and fast times abounded. The Trinidad State Track and Field teams were in action for the second weekend in a row on their quest to qualify athletes to the NJCAA Championships in March. The Trojans booked on ticket to nationals and had two individual victories in the invitational that held competition from 4-year schools around the area.
For Trinidad State the meet was highlighted by Adrian Villarreal's performance in the men's 1,000 meters. Villarreal clicked off consistent fast laps before kicking over the final 200 meters to punch his ticket to the NJCAA Championships with a qualifying time of 2:35.93 (after altitude conversion). Villarreal was followed across the line by a host of Trojans of Scott Hubbard, Collin Moore, and Vincent Kipchirchir in that order. Vincent Kipchirchir also raced the men's mile where he took the victory in his heat and posted a personal best time.
Three Trojans competed in the longest event held on an indoor track; the 5000 meter run. Loryn Trujillo competed aggressively from the start of the women's race and finished in 3rd place with a time of 20:42, which ranks her 11th in the NJCAA currently. Jarred Baca and Kyle Awelagte battle in a fast men's race. The duo ended up 7th and 8th respectively and currently sit at 14th and 15th in the NJCAA in the 5000 meters.
Elijah Figueroa was back on the track in the men's 60 meter dash after posting a school record in the event last week. Figueroa tied that record again this week as he finished 15th in a deep field of athletes. Carli Valdez competed for the first time this season and first time ever on an indoor track to place 3rd in the women's 3,000 meters. Kianna Quintana and Vanessa Dominguez competed in the women's 800 meters where they placed 9th and 10th respectively.
The track teams will have the upcoming weekend off as they prepare for an important meet in the season on February 11th when they will compete at the University of New Mexico Don Kirby Elite Invitational.
