GUNNISON, CO - The Trinidad State track and field teams got the spring semester started this past Saturday at the Western Colorado Open in Gunnison, Colorado.  Both men's and women's squads faced strong competition from deep 4-year schools in Colorado Mesa and Western Colorado. The Trojans walked away from the meet with a host of personal best performances and high finishes but were highlighted by the school record by Elijah Figueroa in the men's 60 meter dash. 

Figueroa cut .11 seconds from the previous record in his first race in 17 months. All-American freshman Loryn Trujillo ran a personal best to finish 5th in the women's mile; competing well over the 8 lap race to post the 21st best time in the NJCAA. In the men's mile Adrian Villarreal took 5th place and posted the 20th best time in the NJCAA currently. Villarreal returned in the 800 meters to race alongside teammates Scott Hubbard and Collin Moore. Hubbard took a victory in his heat with a blazing last 100 meters, going from 3rd place to 1st place and stamping a time of 2:02.20. Moore finished a few seconds behind in 2:07.00. The men's 3000 meters was the final event for the Trojan contingent. Sophomore Jarred Baca crossed the line first in 9:31.15 to finish in 4th place as the highest placing Trojan of the meet. Freshman Kyle Awelagte was not far behind in 8th place with a time of 9:46.48. Vincent Kipchirchir rounded out TSC's competitors in 11th place. 

The track and field teams will both be back in action in Alamosa on January 28th at the Wes Lavong Invitational.
