Trojans falter at home

(TRINIDAD, Colo.) – Great play, mixed with erratic moments have served to create a losing streak for the Lady Trojan volleyball squad. The Trojans have seen instances of brilliance almost every time they take the court, but despite having runs of very good play and nice leads, they have not been able to finish a set off over the past few games. This pattern continued over the weekend as the Trojans dropped matches to McCook, Northeastern and #5 ranked Western Nebraska.

The game on Thursday evening with McCook was an example of the frustration the Trojans are going through. They battled point for point in the first set only to see the Indians score two straight right at the end for the 25-23 win. The second set saw the Trojans lead by as much as five at 15-10, only to fall 25-19. The final set was all McCook 25-17. Briana Gomez had eight kills and four blocks to lead the Trojans.

On Friday evening TSJC hosted a much-improved Northeastern team. The Plainswomen rolled to wins of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-18. Even in the loss the Trojans showed signs of just how good they can be as they rallied to outscore Northeastern toward the end of each set only to see the comebacks fall short. Freshman Antonia Harrison had seven kills and Priscilla Sanchez finished with 13 assists to lead the Trojans.

The Trojans could have easily folded up the tents for their Saturday match with nationally ranked Western Nebraska. The Cougars came in with a 26-3 record and a top-5 ranking. The Trojans were unfazed, leading much of the first set and pushing WNCC to a 31-29 final score. Western would win the next two sets, but again the Trojan team demonstrated that can compete with anyone. Harrison again led the Trojans with 10 kills, Caitlyn Nuschy finished with three blocks and Sanchez finished with 19 assists and 14 digs.

The Trojans will play at Otero Junior College on Tuesday night before returning for their final home game of the season on Saturday night. They will host Lamar at 7 p.m. in Scott Gym for sophomore night.
