Trojans split weekend series

(TRINIDAD, Colo.) – The Lady Trojans faced a pair of Region IX opponents this past weekend at Central Park, falling to Northeastern on Saturday and defeating Western Nebraska on Sunday afternoon. The games were played at Central Park because of poor playing conditions at Los Niños due to the heavy rain last week. The City of Trinidad park and recreation department did a great job getting Central ready for the weekend games.

On Saturday afternoon, the Trojans had a slow start against Northeastern JC. They gave up a goal in the opening moments and another midway through the half. Those two goals were the only shots the Plainswomen put on target in the 90' minutes, but they were enough for the win. The Trojans on the other hand put twelve shots on target, but could not slip one past goalkeeper Katie Saunders.

Sunday's game was similar as the Trojans had trouble getting a shot into the net. Out of the 13 attempts they took, only one, a penalty kick by Corina Enriquez, managed to find its way past the Cougar keeper. Fortunately for the Trojans, Western was not able to get any shots past the Trojan defense as Amber Mitchell finished with four saves.

The Trojans are 5-6 on the season and in a close race in the south sub region for second place. They have one region game remaining, against first place Otero at Los Niños at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11. They will then wrap their regular season at home against Western Wyoming Community College on Friday, October 13 at 1:00 p.m.
