Vs. Lamar

Monday's Region 9 game between rivals Lamar and Trinidad was a tale of four unique quarters of basketball followed by a hard-fought overtime.

Trinidad State dominated the first quarter with hot shooting from guards Mya Williams and Ylenia Expósito Pérez. Great defensive pressure, keyed by sophomore Sonya Dozier, caused a number of turnovers and TSC led 22-13 after the first ten minutes. Lamar "flipped the script" in the second quarter, outscoring Trinidad 22-13, and by the time the halftime buzzer sounded the lead had disappeared and the score was tied at 35.

The Trojans started the second half out strong behind a solid effort from Jasmin Rivero, jumping out to a 45-40 lead after only three minutes of play. Then the Trojan offense disappeared. Lamar scored 20 straight unanswered points over the next nine minutes of play to find themselves comfortably in front 60-45 with just over seven minutes to play in the game. Trinidad finally started hitting some shots, with guard Victoria Hickman finding her post players under the hoop. TSC roared back and the score was tied at 67 at the end of regulation.

The overtime went back-and-forth with the Trojans taking a late lead. TSC made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 80-77 win. Vega Lopez continued her dominate play, recording 20 rebounds to go with her 20 points. Expósito Pérez led the Trinidad scorers with 24 points including a perfect 7-7 shooting performance from the free throw line.
