Trojans open with win at home

(Trinidad, Colo.) – Trinidad State tipped off the 2017-18 basketball season this past Wednesday evening in a contest with Air Force Prep at Scott Gym. The Lady Trojans shook off a slow start to pick up their first win of the year 53-45 over the Huskies.

Trinidad looked a bit sluggish early, trailing by one after the first quarter. It was sophomore post Annette Warner who kept them in it early with a field goal and two free throws in the quarter. The Trojans turned the tempo up late in the second quarter pleasing veteran head coach Rich Holden and giving them a 20-16 lead at the break. Warner continued her strong play and got help from the outside in the form of five points from former Lady Miner Shaylynn Choate.

In the third quarter Daniela Ortega came up strong for the Trojans with seven points and a pair of rebounds. TSJC extended their lead in the final stanza to wrap it up 53-45. Warner was the high scorer for the Trojans with 13, Ortega finished with 12, Choate and Jordan Wyatt each had seven. Ortega had nine boards and Shahennessey Bradford had a strong game with four points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

The Trojans (1-0) are on the road this weekend, but they will return to Scott Gym on Tuesday evening to host Adams State JV. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
