Trojans wrap season in Semifinals

(SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.) – The magical run by the Lady Trojan basketball team came to an end Friday evening in Scottsbluff, Nebraska with TSJC dropping a tight contest to Eastern Wyoming in the semifinal round. The previous evening the Trojans prevailed over Miles Community College in the Region IX quarterfinals. Trinidad finished the season 16-16, 10-4 in region, in what many believe was the most successful season in program history.

On Thursday evening the Trojans jumped out to a quick 12-5 advantage and would never trail the Pioneers in the contest. TSJC shook off a poor shooting performance to eliminate Miles 44-37. Alaynna Latimore came off the bench to lead the Trojans in scoring with eight points. Hannah Faulks also came off the bench to lead TSJC with ten rebounds and Kaila Gabriel dished off three assists.

A slow start on Friday evening doomed the Trojans to an earlier exit than they were hoping for. Facing Eastern Wyoming the Trojans fell behind 10-0 early in the first quarter and trailed 27-16 at the half. A solid second half saw them cut the lead to two points late in the game but the Lancer free throws went in down the stretch and the comeback fell short. Annette Warner led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds and Clarissa Chavez pulled down ten rebounds in her final game as a Lady Trojan.

The Trojans garnered a handful of post-season awards following their tremendous season. Sophomore Tammarrah Gothard was named to the All-Region team and Alaynna Latimore was selected to the Region IX All-Defensive team. Following their excellent showing at the tournament Hannah Faulks and Annette Warner each earned spots on the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Trojans return a solid group of players this fall, but they have big shoes to fill. TSJC will lose a group of great leaders to graduation this May when Latimore, Gabriel, Gothard, Chavez, Faulks, Nyece Smith and Jenny Hugins cross the stage at graduation. This group has done a tremendous job leading both on and off the court and we wish them the best in the future.
