2023 Recap of Trojan Softball

2023 Recap of Trojan Softball

The 2023 season didn't end the way they wanted it to as the Lady Trojans fell in the Region 9 Championship game to Northeastern Junior College by the score of 8-7. Despite the loss, the Trojans still had a great year finishing second in conference and second in the region with an overall record of 38-14. The 38 wins is the second best in school history tied with the 2017 team and behind the 2016 team who had 39 wins that year.

Some highlights of the season included getting the softball program's 500th win for the school and also setting a new record for consecutive wins with 15 straight victories during the season passing the teams of 2007 and 2020 who had 13-game win streaks.

Some Lady Trojans got into the record books, as freshman Ciara Spencer set the new batting average record hitting .583 this season, breaking the record of former NJCAA All-American Isabella Navarro who hit .511 back in 2017. Fellow freshman Zoey Neeld-Stewart also entered the school records hitting 21 HR in a season that put her third in HR for a season behind current UNC Bear Jayden Gandert who hit 25 HR in 2021 and Navarro who has the season record of 30 HR back in 2017. Freshmen pitcher Torie Sandoval jumped into first place in the record books for most strikeouts in a season with 185 K's and also tied Teddi Garcia (2017) for the school record for most wins in a season with 22 victories.

The 2023 Trojans set the new school record in batting average for the season hitting .405 surpassing the 2017 team who hit .396. The 500 runs scored this season moved this team to second all-time in the record books and their 92 home runs ranks them third on the all-time charts behind the teams of 2017 (118) and 2021 (108).

Now that the season is over, Coach Steve Swazo (who is only 26 wins away from 500) will now hit the recruiting trail for the summer to bring in more quality student athletes for the program and also look forward to bringing in (14) talented freshmen in the fall that will make up the 2023-24 Trojan squad.
