Tough weekend in Texas

Tough weekend in Texas
It was a rough weekend in Texas as the Lady Trojans struggled offensively and defensively dropping a pair of doubleheaders to Midland College and Odessa College.

During Saturday's contests against Midland College, the Lady Trojans bats were more productive but still fell short. In game one, Trinidad made a fierce comeback off homeruns from Ka'Zem Wood, Ashley Burns and Sydney Loyet but still lost 10-8. Game two saw the Trojans behind the whole game and could not put together a big inning and lost by the score of 6-2 despite a solid pitching performance from Kayla Aspass-Frank.

On Fridays games against Odessa College, the Wranglers showed why they are ranked 10th in the nation defeating Trinidad 8-0 and 25-3. In the first game sophomore Odessa pitcher Aydenne Brown, who was a 1st Team All-American last year, kept the Trinidad hitters in check with zero hits over three innings while recording seven strikeouts. Odessa jumped on Trinidad starter Chaunelle Penn tor seven first inning runs and added a run in the third inning off Kayla Aspass-Frank in relief. The Lady Trojans lone hit was from sophomore Ramona Fossum in the top of the fifth inning. The second game didn't go much better for the Trojans as the pitching staff struggled giving up 25 runs and 25 hits. Trinidad only had three hits in the game, Nayshka Cordero (home run), Andrea Thompson (double) and a single from Angelique Navarro

"The trip definitely didn't go as planned", head coach Steve Swazo said. "I really thought we would compete better against Odessa but our team seemed to be on their heels the whole game. Odessa is a good team but we really didn't show them the true team we are. Against Midland I thought the team played more loose and did a better job of hitting the ball than the day before. I thought a couple of calls went their way that helped Midland but that's softball. All these road, non-conference games are learning experiences for my players. The key is to learn from these losses and turn them into teaching moments so the next time, in the same situation, they'll handle it better. There are a lot of games left in the season and I still believe we have a very good team and will continue to improve and make adjustments."

One key note, in the first game of the Midland series with runners on first and third Trinidad turned a triple play. Center fielder Ciara Salazar dove for a line drive and caught it, then threw to first base for the second out, then first baseman Andrea Thompson threw to third base where the runner left early on the catch for the triple play.

Trinidad's next games will be Sunday Feb 27th at home against Air Force for a doubleheader at 11-1 pm at Southside Park.
