Lady Trojans pick up two wins at home

After a few lengthy weather postponements, the Trojan softball team finally got the chance to play a home series this past week. Trinidad took two games from Garden City Community College by the scores of 9-5 and 11-10.

In game one, it was the third and fourth innings that Trinidad ignited the scoreboard with eight runs in those two innings. Sophomore Ka'Zem Wood accounting for three RBI's with a home run. Trinidad would add another lone run off a home run from freshman Sydney Loyet to close out the scoring for the 9-5 win. Sophomore pitcher Chaunelle Penn got the victory going five innings, allowing 5 runs though only three earned. Freshman pitcher Kirstin Ferguson pitcher the final two innings only allowing one hit and no runs.

The second game had Trinidad jumping to a 5-1 lead after three innings. In the third inning the Lady Trojans connected on five doubles from Xochitl Trejo, Katie DeVille, Ashley Burns, Ayla Rivera and Ramona Fossum. Also in the inning Angelique Navarro hit a home run. Freshman pitcher Hannah Crouch was breezing along into the fourth when the Trinidad defense fell apart allowing Garden City to score nine runs. In that inning, Trinidad committed a total of three errors and some walks allowing Garden City to take the lead 10-5. The Lady Trojans would fight back scoring one run in the fifth off a solo home run from Navarro then scoring two runs in the sixth, highlighted by a home run from Kelly Kight, then putting up a three-spot in the seventh inning for the 11-10 victory. Freshman pitcher Kayla Aspaas-Frank came in in relief and pitched two solid innings before Penn coming in to pitch the seventh holding the visitors to zero runs for her third win of the season

Trinidad moved to 4-3 on the young season and will next play Feb 18th at 10th ranked Odessa College for a doubleheader followed by two games at Midland College on Feb 19th.

"If we can ever clean up some small miscues with our defense, then we are going to be a tough team to beat," softball coach Steve Swazo said. "We will hit the ball but our defense needs to help our pitchers out. I know shoveling snow for three days didn't help but we are a better defensive team than what we are playing. I'm confident we will get things ironed out."

In the two games against Garden City, Trinidad connected on five homeruns bringing their season total to 14, ranking them #5 in the nation in that category. Trinidad next home series is Feb 26th against Air Force.
