Trojan Softball is ready for Spring
The Trinidad State College softball schedule for the 2022 season is now out according to head coach Steve Swazo. The Lady Trojans will play a total of 55 games in the regular season with 20 of those to be played at Southside Park.

"We are very excited for the upcoming 2022 season," said head coach Steve Swazo. "TEAM 16 is a very hard-working team, driven to get better with a very competitive schedule and will be on the thick of things at the end of the season."

Trinidad State opens its season on the road January 28 at the CSN (College of Southern Nevada) Coyote Classic. The Lady Trojans will play three games on January 28 against Salt Lake City, Snow College and Yavapai College. Then on January 29 will play the host team along with Central Arizona College.

"Beginning the season playing two teams (Salt Lake City and Yavapai) right off the bat will definitely tell us where we stack up against some of the best teams in the nation," Swazo said. "Both qualified for last year's National Tournament and Yavapai finished 4th."

TSC (Trinidad State College) will then come home to host games Feb 5-6 against Garden City Community College and Frank Phillips College. The next week, Trinidad State will travel to Texas to play national qualifier Odessa College and Midland College Feb 18-19.

Trinidad will be back home Feb 26 with a double header hosting Air Force.

March 3-4-5 the Lady Trojans will open Region 9 Conference play at McCook to play each of the Region 9 schools over a 3-day period.

The Lady Trojans will host Seward Community College on March 7 then play their next 20 games on the road traveling to Garden City (March 9) Adams State ( March 11), Colby (March 20) and Seward Community College (March 21), Western Nebraska (March 26-27), Luna Community College (April 4-5), Lamar Community College (April 9-10).

"That road swing will definitely test us playing that many games on the road," Swazo said. "In order to be successful, you have to win on the road so the team will have to dig deep."

After playing on the road, the Lady Trojans will play their final 12 games at home to close out their conference schedule with four game home series against Otero College (April 16-17), McCook Community College (April 23-24) and Northeastern Junior College (April 30-May 1).

"Will be nice to play our remaining games at home," the TSC coach said. "Those games could determine the conference title and is nice to be playing those games on our home turf."

The Lady Trojans return (8) sophomores from last year's Region 9 Championship team along with (11) new freshmen and one transfer.

"My sophomores did a great job in the fall of being good leaders and know what it takes to win a championship so that will carry over to our young freshman group," Swazo said. "If my freshman grow up quickly and win the mental aspect of the game, I believe this team will be in the hunt for another Region 9 Championship. They definitely can swing it and if the pitching comes through, I have no doubt will be in contention for another title."

Coach Swazo enters his 16th year at the helm of Lady Trojan Softball program and looks to add to his 408 victories. Assistant Coach Tori Martinez returns for a second year that includes winning a regional championship as a player (2017) and as a coach (2021).
