HENDERSON, Nev. –   The Lady Trojan Softball team opened their 2020 season against some of the best teams in Arizona and Utah and held their own despite losing all four games.

Trinidad lost to #16 ranked Yavapai 13-9, fell to #5 ranked Salt Lake City 11-1, lost to #9 ranked Arizona Western 5-4 and dropped the final game to #3 ranked Phoenix College 6-5. Arizona Western was a qualifier at the NJCAA D1 national championships last season and Phoenix College finished runner-up at the NJCAA D2 National Championships a year ago.

"For only being on dirt three times prior to the Nevada trip and seeing no live pitching I am very pleased with how this team competed this past weekend," Head Coach Steve Swazo said. "I knew we would be a good hitting team and this group came out of the gate swinging. We saw a lot of good things."

The Trojans had five home runs in their four games with freshman Sydney Stewart leading the way with two. Also hitting homeruns were sophomore Megan Reidhead and freshmen Gianna Paape and Bailey Griego. Stewart had the hot bat going 7-for-9 with 7 RBI. 

"Syd is going to have a great year," Swazo said. "She is just going to get better and better as the season progresses. She hits the ball hard and far."

The Lady Trojans are back on the road this coming week as they travel to Texas for four games. They play Snow College and Luna Community College on Friday in Midland and then Seward County and Odessa College on Saturday in Odessa. Trinidad's first home game is scheduled for February 22 against Luna.
