Wins & Qualifiers at Maverick Invite

The TSC Track teams competed in Grand Junction on April 1st and 2nd at the Maverick Invite. Colorado Mesa University hosted the meet which involved many 4-year universities from around the state of Colorado. A cool and breezy Friday evening led to some strong performances in the 10,000 meters races for the Trojans. Ashley Lagat and Vanessa Dominguez embarked on the 25-lap race with a goal of qualifying for the NJCAA Championships in May. Lagat clicked off laps consistently for just over 40 minutes to grab the first qualifying time of the meet for the Trinidad State contingent. Dominguez came up just short of a qualifying time, but performed well in her first attempt at the longest race in track racing. Though already leading the NJCAA in the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters steeplechase, Ahmed Sado asserted himself at the front of the Men's 10,000 meters. As athletes slowly fell behind Sado clung to the leaders. With a late push Sado moved into second place and solidified another fastest time in the NJCAA.

Saturday morning was even more blustery than the night before; though the athletes from Trinidad State did not let the adverse conditions slow them down any. Sharon Jesang competed amidst a strong pack of athletes in the women's 5,000 meters. She faded off the leaders in the final laps but still was able to record the second-fastest outdoor time in the NJCAA. In the women's 1,500 meters Tamsin Stewart and Kianna Quintana raced to personal best times. Adrian Villareal posted a personal best time in the men's 1,500 meters as well. Ethan Coyhis took to the start line in the men's 800 meters alongside some accomplished 4-year athletes. Coyhis sat in fourth place for the first lap of the race before moving past two athletes from Colorado Mines down the backstretch. Coyhis never relinquished the lead and finished in a personal best and NJCAA Championships qualifying time. His time currently ranks Coyhis 13th in the NJCAA. Adrian Villarreal followed Coyhis' lead to wrap up the meet with another victory for the Trojans. Villarreal stalked the leaders of the race for 600 meters before launching around the outside into the final turn to storm away in dramatic fashion. His time was a personal best.

The track teams will be back in action in two weeks with the teams splitting to attend a host of meets in California and Colorado.
