Trojan Track Team Posts Top Times in Albuquerque

The Trinidad State track and field teams traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico this past weekend to compete at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The two day meet included many four year schools from across the country. The two day meet began Friday evening with notable performances from Benadine Chelimo and Derek Holdsworth. Chelimo battled to a 3rd place finish in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:43.44, a personal best and 5th best time in the NJCAA. Holdsworth also finished in 3rd place in the men's 600 meters in 1:19.18, a time which currently is 3rd in the nation.

The following day brought strong performances from Toni Moore, Godfrey Chama, Chelimo, and Holdsworth. Moore competed in the heat 2 of the women's mile finishing 9th in a time of 5:30.57. This time ranks Moore 9th in the NJCAA currently. Holdsworth and Chama finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the men's 800 against strong competition. With times of 1:51.76 and 1:52.57 these two Trojan men currently hold the two fastest times in the NJCAA. Chelimo had another competitive performance in the women's 800 with a time of 2:23.81, which adds another top time in the country for Chelimo at 6th. Chelimo is currently ranked no lower than 6th in the NJCAA in all three distances she has competed in this season.

Both teams will have the next week off before being back in action with a full squad February 8th and 9th in Alamosa at the Adams State Grizzly Open.
