Trojans secure first in the South

(TRINIDAD, Colo.) – A physical, fast paced soccer match thrilled the fans at Los Niños on Wednesday afternoon, and it was the Trojans avenging a loss in La Junta earlier this year who would emerge victorious over their Region IX rivals Otero. Via the 4-2 win TSJC secured the top seed out of the region's south conference.

In Wednesday's game the Trojans struck first on a cross from Biska Biyombo to Roch Alico. Alico's fourth goal of the season put TSJC up 1-0 only seven minutes in. Otero answered back in the 15' minute when Steve Favela scored off an assist from Sebastian Garcia. The score would remain 1-1 going into the second half. After the half, it would be Biyombo to put the Trojans back up with his twelfth goal of the season. Biyombo then found Ueslei Vicente Silva who scored to make it 3-1. Otero cut the lead on a Gimale Essacu goal with half an hour remaining. The last third of the contest was wild and hard fought. Both teams had chances but it was an own goal from the Otero defense that would put it out of reach for TSJC late. The final score ended up at 4-2.

TSJC hosted Western Wyoming for a slightly calmer, non-conference match on Friday. It was again an own goal from the Mustangs that would put the Trojans up 1-0 early. That score held until the 56' minute when Elijah Mwenebitu took the ball and drilled it past the keeper. The Trojans held on late for the 2-0 win.

TSJC (13-4) wrapped up the regular season as the top seed in the south. They will host the fourth seed out of the north, Laramie County CC, this coming weekend in the Region IX quarterfinals. That game is schedule at Los Niños Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The winner will advance to the semifinals in Denver the following weekend.
