Trojans top Eagles in Overtime

(TRINIDAD, Colo.) – The Trojan Soccer team moved their 2017 record to 8-3 with a 3-2 overtime win at Los Niños Park on Thursday. The Trojans defeated Utah State University Eastern on a "Golden Goal" in overtime to seal the victory. In NJCAA rules when the teams are tied after regulation they play two 10-minute overtime periods. If either team scores the game is over, if neither score after the 20-minutes it results in a draw. It took the Trojans just over eight minutes in the first overtime to break the tie and claim the win.

The Trojans got the scoring started midway through the first half when the Eagles failed to clear the ball on a corner and Khori Edmond swooped in to blast it past the keeper. Trinidad would double its lead early in the second half when Elijah Mwenebitu found Roch Alico on the edge of the box. Alico slid it past the keeper for his third goal of the season.

USU-E would waste little time responding when Mat Clark knocked a ball in off of an assist from Xavier Smith. Then, in the 73' minute Smith would tie it up with a goal of his own. To overtime the game went tied at 2-2.

The Eagles threatened early in the extra period, forcing Trojan keeper Shamar Jemison to make a difficult save with the sun in his face. The Trojans built momentum and started getting chances on the other side. On the final play, Ruben Ramirez worked the ball down the sideline. The Trojans reversed the field and Ronaldo Watson hit a screamer that rattled off the crossbar. The rebound fell back at the feet of Ramirez, who controlled it and slipped it past the keeper for the winning goal.
