Basketball prepares for playoffs

Vs. McCook

Trinidad State looked to play their last regular season games on the road, to start the trip, they traveled to Nebraska to take on McCook.  The team was riding high after their win against Otero, at home, but road games are always more challenging.  To begin the game, teams were trading buckets back and forth.  McCook had a player committed to Cleveland State, and the Trojans had no answer for him.  On offense Trinidad looked smooth and were able to share the ball well.  Their lackluster defense allowed McCook to stay in the game.

The Trojans took a slight lead the half.  When the teams came back out, the Trojans took control.  They were locked in and ready to go.  The energy and defensive effort they gave in the second half allowed them to exhaust McCook.  The Trojans defeated McCook.

One of the many bright spots of the game was Javon Tolliver, scoring 18 points, and shooting nearly 50% from the field.  It seemed as if everything was coming easy to him.  The Trojans also had a gang of players with 5 or more rebounds.  That is the type of effort needed every night to win games.

Vs. North Platte

The last game of the season was against North Platte.  The Trojans went into the game confident from their past success, but they came out of the gate a little flat.

And were unable to find ways to score because of North Platte's defense.  The Knights were able to control a majority of the game.  North Platte was able to execute with all of their players.  The Trojans defense could not handle it.  The Knights took a lead going into the half.

The second half started, and North Platte continued to dominate.  Dejour Reaves kept the Trojans in the game with his prolific scoring.  Trinidad tried to change up their defensive scheme, but it only helped so much.  The lack of energy and effort really hurt the Trojans.  But they were able to battle until the end.  By that time the game was over.  Too little too late.   North Platte beat Trinidad state.

The Trojans top 2 scores, Dylan West and Dejour Reaves combined for nearly 50 points.  Dejour scored 31.  Robel Desta put up 14 points and 7 rebounds.  Gary Johns had 2 blocks and Dylan West had 3 offensive rebounds.

Looking forward:

The Trojans secured a home playoff game in the first round of the tournament and have a chance to host the entire event.  Trinidad State is in 2nd and has an opportunity to finish in 1st.
