ESports program coming to Trinidad State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – ESports is one of the fastest growing programs in athletic departments across the country, with hundreds of two-year and four-year schools joining the competition each year. The NJCAA, of which Trinidad is a member, had over 60 teams playing esports this past year and expects to add close to 100 new schools by this fall.

The eSport gaming realm is a competition matching up competitors from around the country in various video game arenas. Some of the most popular games are League of Legends, Fortnite, Rocket League, Overwatch, and NBA 2K.

Coach Serena "Sully" Sullivan has been the driving force behind Trinidad State's team. Sully recently joined the college family as the Director of Technology Program Development and Instruction. Upon arrival at Trinidad State, Sully approached President Rhonda Epper to gain approval for a collegiate eSports team. Dr. Epper gave immediate approval for the new program and the plans for eSports blossomed.

"ESports will bring new energy to Trinidad State's Valley Campus, and it perfectly complements our expanding programs in Computer Information Systems," said Epper.

"When the opportunity presented itself to start an eSports program, I was excited to share information with the leadership team," Sullivan said. "Vice President James Kynor helped me develop the proposal, which establishes Trinidad State as the first community college in Colorado with a collegiate eSports team!"

Sullivan is in the process of creating a state-of-art gaming lab on the Valley Campus in Alamosa. The college has purchased six competition stations, six practice stations and several gaming consoles. Trinidad State will have up to 15 gamers competing at one time with an almost unlimited number of spots on the team.
