Baseball sweeps home opening series

TSJC opened the 2018 home season with a doubleheader with Garden City Community College on a frigid Sunday afternoon at Central Park. Despite temperatures in the 20's the Trojan bats stayed hot throughout the afternoon to pick up a pair of victories by the scores of 13-3 and 3-2. The Broncbusters had defeated the Trojans in a pair of games in Garden City on Friday, so the wins were even more important for the Trojan squad.

In the first game on Sunday, Garden City got off to a strong start when a Trojan error allowed a run to cross in the first. TSJC took the lead in a big way in the bottom half of the second inning when an error allowed three runs across, followed by a shot off the bat of Conrado Diaz that splashed into the lake at Central for two more runs. TSJC would continue to hit well the rest of the game as they ended it in the fifth 13-3. Reese Patterson finished the game with three RBI's and Blake Mattey was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Eli Sievert picked up the win, going 4 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.

Game two started the way game one finished, with the Trojans swing the bats well. A Diaz double plated Alex Bedard and Carlo Mancillas, before Diaz would score the third run of the game on an RBI from Mattey. TSJC would make those three runs hold the rest of the way. A great start from Anthony Durbano, three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings got the win, but a great close from Vance Ferraro was the key. The lefty from Trinidad High School, with help from a great double play in the fifth, went 2 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out three to seal the win 3-2.

This week the Trojans (2-2, 0-0) will travel to Thatcher, Arizona for a series with Eastern Arizona CC. They will then return home the following week for games with CSU.
