Trojans drop pair at home

TRINIDAD, Colo. - The Trinidad State volleyball team dropped a pair of Region IX games at home this weekend, falling to nationally ranked Western Nebraska on Friday and McCook Community College on Saturday.

On Friday night the Lady Trojans hung tough with #19 ranked WNCC. The Cougars came into Scott Gym with a 16-5 record. TSJC got off to a slow start in set one and fell 25-12. The second set was better, but they would go down 2-0. With their backs against the wall the Trojans rallied in the third set, leading all the way to a 25-22 win. The Cougars bounced back in the final set to finish the Trojans off 3-1. Freshman outside hitter Natalia Ospino had a big night for TSJC finishing with 11 kills and three blocks. Fellow freshmen Angelina Dean had six kills and Masha Armstrong had 13 assists and 15 digs.

A slow start on Saturday afternoon got the Trojans into a hole they would not be able to climb out of against McCook. The Indians would win in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-23. Julieanna Ramos and Andrea Puakavase had five kills each to lead the Trojans. Jocelyn Charlesworth had 12 assists and Johanna Hoffpauir finished with 15 digs.

The Trojans are now 0-2 in Region IX play and 5-17 overall. They will host Otero Junior College on Friday night at 6pm in Scott Gym. It will be the annual "Pink Out" game as the Trojans recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
