Lady Trojans finish season 8-7

TRINIDAD, Colo. – The successful 2019 soccer season came to an end in dramatic fashion last month in Sheridan, Wyoming as the Trojans fell to Generals in Penalty Kicks following a stellar 1-1 contest. The Trojans finished the year with eight wins and in fifth place in the Region IX standings. They had won six of their final seven games heading into the playoff matchup in Sheridan. In that game the Trojans gave up a goal early in the second half but quickly reclaimed the tie on an unassisted goal from Wendy De Loera. The teams played the rest of regulation and both overtimes scoreless. Sheridan converted all of their penalty kicks to advance to the next round.

The Trojans had a great year that included wins over Western Nebraska and Otero. Two Trojans were named to the Region IX All-Region squad. Sophomore Wendy De Loera, who scored nine goals and had one assist during the season, was named second team. Marlene Mendez, a freshman from Las Cruces was named Honorable Mention. She scored four goals and assisted on two others.

The Trojans will see a great sophomore class moving on. Congratulations to these sophomores for their tremendous two years for soccer at TSJC - Cambri Curtis, Madison Kaminky, Hayley Leatherwood, Wendy De Loera, Reina Sotelo, Isabel Pinheiro, Hannah Day, Ava Bishop, Halie Velarde, Jade Glasser, Ashlee Minne, and Indiana Madrid.

The Trojans will have a solid core returning. Joining Mendez in returning next season will be defender Destiny Button who scored once this season, forward Laura Torres who scored six goals this year, and Liliana Flores who was injured in preseason.

The Lady Trojans are also one of the top academic teams at Trinidad State and they will be working hard in the off season to take the top GPA in the 2019-20 academic year.
