Trojan Shield Weekly Update: November 19, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Trojan Basketball

It should be a quiet week on campus. Most of the student-athletes have some time off to go home and recharge before finals, and before one of the busiest weeks of the semester with the TSJC Tournament coming up. The only athletes on campus this week should be the basketball players as they have three games each. When the rest of the athletes return the following week, it will be time for them to put their noses to the grindstone for the final stretch run. We want them to finish the semester strong. I’m sure they are thankful for the fall break.

I would like to give a special shout-out to our basketball teams. They are both 6-1 after three weeks of play. It has been a tremendous start to the fall season. Great job to the athletes and coaches!

Rohr takes a shot

TSJC improved to 6-1 this week with a pair of wins over ASU JV and Garden City. The Trojans will have a few days off before returning to the court on Tuesday, November 20 when they host Laramie County at Scott Gym.

The Trojans dominated Adams State's junior varsity on Tuesday evening in Alamosa. TSJC led 39-15 at the half and just kept it in cruise control through the second half for the 69-34 win. Conner Proctor led all scorers with 17 in the contest. Nuria Saez grabbed her first double-double in a Trojan uniform with eleven rebounds and ten points.

In the friendly confines of Scott Gym on Wednesday night the Trojans climbed back from a 13-point deficit midway through the first half to defeat the 3-1 Broncbusters from Garden City. Kate Rohr scored 23 points off the bench for TSJC. Saez and Julia Trujillo combined for 23, as the Trojans climbed into the lead with a 19-7 third quarter run and held on for a 63-60 win.

TSJC will host the Golden Eagles from LCCC on Tuesday at 6pm. LCCC is 4-2 on the season. Following that home contest, the Trojans will travel to Scottsbluff, Nebraska for a holiday tournament at Western Nebraska Community College.

Basketball wins pair at Otero Classic

shot to the basket

The Trojan men’s basketball team cruised through the competition this weekend as they routed Lamar JV 95-55 and then defeated Region IX foe Northwest College 92-70 at the Otero Classic in La Junta.

On Friday evening it was an all around team effort as the Trojans ran past the Lopes JV. The Trojans led 50-26 at the half and went on to win by 40 points. Ian Kelly led the way with 12 points. Goy Wang and Jasiah Lewis each added ten off the bench.

On Saturday afternoon four Trojan starters reached double figures in points as Trinidad dispatched the Trappers from Northwest College. Northwest had defeated Lamar on Thursday before falling to Otero on Friday. Keontae White led the effort with a double-double, 18 points and ten assists. Kelly added 17 points, Bilal Shabazz put in 16 points and David Muenkat had 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Trojans are 6-1. They will host Laramie County CC on Tuesday at 4pm, and then travel to Scottsbluff, Nebraska this weekend for a holiday tournament.

Sanchez signs with CSU-Pueblo

Signing Day

Congratulations to sophomore outfielder Jordan Sanchez for signing her National Letter of Intent with CSU-Pueblo. Jordan came to TSJC from Pueblo West. She had 153 at-bats as a freshman last season, picking up 44 hits and scoring 33 times. The speedy Sanchez will most likely take over the centerfield duties this season after playing in left field most of last season. Congratulations Jordan!

New signings this week

It was a busy week for the coaches as they were recruiting hard for next year. We had a number of new Trojans commit to play at TSJC in 2019-20. This week’s new signees include – for Baseball, Tyler Hankins from Norman, Oklahoma, and from Softball, Sydney Stewart (Arvada, Colorado), Anna Novak-Palomar and Morgan Pantaleo (Pueblo, Colorado), Paola Holguin (Tornillo, Texas), Ariana Samarripa (Cedar Creek, Texas), and Emilee Younger (Thornton, Colorado). Some of the photos are below.
