Trojan Shield Weekly Update: October 29, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Trojan Champions

It was great week for the TSJC athletic department. Thanks to a pair of awe-inspiring team performances we brought home our first Region IX hardware of the year. The Cross Country teams ran past the field at their meet in Riverton, Wyoming to claim not only both of the team titles, but all of the individual awards as well. More on their amazing performance later in this newsletter, but suffice it to say we are very proud of their effort. They went into this weekend highly favored to win, and did not disappoint. The coaches did a masterful job keeping the athletes focused after a long trip and with a small field of runners. Not an easy situation to be in after competing at some large meets with very good teams all year. They excelled and brought home the gold. Two titles in the books for TSJC.

One other note this week, the 83rd annual TSJC Invitational is one month away. The high school basketball season will be tipping off in style in late November this year as we host 24 games in three days. The cheer competition will get us going on Wednesday the 28th with the tournament to follow on Thursday through Saturday.

Cross Country claims region gold

Women's runners lead the pack

The Trojan Cross Country teams headed to Riverton, Wyoming for the 2018 Region IX Cross Country Meet hosted by Central Wyoming College. The nationally ranked Trojan squads each scored perfect scores of 15 on their way to winning a pair of region crowns. Trinidad not only claimed both team awards, but took home all of the gold as they won all of the individual medals and both Coach-of-the-Year awards.

The men ran first on the 8000 meter track. Nine of the 19 participants in the race were running in blue and gold and most of those racers were at the front of the pack. Godfrey Chama took the individual title with a time of 26:00.1. He was joined on the All Region team by John McMahon, Bailey Smith, Riley Allen and Cody Danley. In the team results the Trojans were first, Central was second and Southeast College was third.

In the women’s 5k there were 13 runners, five of those from TSJC. The Trojan five took the top five spots with Benadine Chelimo crossing first with a time of 19:04.5. Toni Moore was second followed by Mary Baldwin, Kathryn Sauerwein and Camille Ruggles. Central Wyoming was the second team to cross.

The Trojans will not have much time to rest on their laurels as they will now prepare for the National meet in Garden City, Kansas. The race will take place the morning of November 10.

Volleyball heads into the region tournament

Volleyball huddle

Region IX will hold a combined Volleyball tournament for the first time in many years, as the teams from the north and south will face off to see which two teams will qualify for the national tournament in late November. The Trojans will go into the tournament as the sixth seed from the south and they will face off with the third seed from the north in a “play-in” game on Wednesday morning. The bracket was not final as of my writing this report, but it appears TSJC will face Western Wyoming. The Mustangs are 13-17 on the year.

The Trojans wrapped up the regular season with an 11-18 record following their four-set win over ASU JV on Tuesday. In that game the Trojans easily won the first set 25-11. ASU fought back for a 25-23 win and then the Trojans took set three 25-17. In the fourth set TSJC went up 10-0 but found themselves victim of a large comeback. The Trojan squad fought hard late for the 27-25 win to claim the match. Freshman Brianna Warren had a big night finishing with 12 kills. Maya Trujillo had 20 assists and 10 digs.

The Trojans, along with the rest of the south schools, look to have a strong showing at the tournament this week. Following the first round it will be a double elimination bracket. You can follow the tournament at http://www.golccc.com/sports/wvball/2018-19/releases/20181025oadk0h

Basketball ready to tip off the season

The Trojan Basketball teams have had a busy October and are ready to flip the calendar this week so they can start playing official games. Both teams are young and have a big task ahead of them going into the 18-19 season.

The men will take the court in Hobbs, New Mexico this weekend with three games against quality opponents. They will open with New Mexico JC, play NMMI on Friday and then wrap up the weekend with the University of the Southwest’s JV squad. The Lady Trojans will head down to Texas to face Clarendon and Frank Phillips.

The teams will each be home the following week as the women host ASU JV on Tuesday, November 6 and the men host Frank Phillips and Northern New Mexico on Friday and Saturday, November 9 and 10.

Giving options

A couple of the teams are currently running fundraising campaigns to try and raise money for equipment. The Men’s Basketball team fundraiser can be found here - and the Baseball campaign can be reached at https://www.tsjctrojans.com/information/baseball/campaign
