We are on the downhill side of the fall sport season. The volleyball squad will play their final home match of the season on Tuesday when they host Adams State JV at 7pm. They will then have the weekend off as they prepare to head to Cheyenne, Wyoming for the Region IX Volleyball tournament in a little over a week. The cross country teams will be looking for region gold as well this weekend as they travel to Riverton, Wyoming for the Region IX Meet hosted by Central Wyoming College. Last year the women’s team brought home the title and the men were second. This year the Trojan squads hope to each claim first place. The women are currently ranked 10th in the nation and the men are 12th.

With their first-round playoff loss to Sheridan College over the weekend the Lady Trojan soccer team wrapped up play for the year. Both soccer teams will now take a break before starting to prepare for next year.

One last thought on the soccer playoff, I would like to send a special than you to the City of Trinidad and the great parks staff. We were forced to play this past weekend’s game at Central Park because of the small size of the field at Los Niños. The city crew, along with our coaches and players, did a great amount of work all week to get Central ready to go. The team from the city is always ready to help us and they have a very positive attitude. It is a pleasure to work with them and I am very grateful for their help this past week.

Volleyball drops pair in region play

Volleyball spike

The Trojan volleyball team played a pair of tight matches with rivals Otero and Lamar this week to wrap up Region IX play. TSJC fell at home to the Rattlers on Tuesday three sets to one and then fell on the road 3-0 to Lamar on Saturday.

Tuesday night was sophomore night as the Trojans honored their four sophomores players. Maria Duran, Trinity Good, Heloisa Niespodzinski and Jasmine Brown were recognized prior to the first serve. Following the short ceremony, it was on to volleyball action with the Trojans defeating Otero 25-20 in one of the best sets of the season for TSJC. A slow start in the second set doomed the Trojans to a 25-21 loss. The third set was point-for-point with the Rattlers pulling away late for the 25-23 win. TSJC again started slow in the final set, but never gave up, fighting back to get within a couple points late. Otero rallied again for the 25-19 win. Duran led the Trojans with 13 kills in the match followed by ten from freshman Paola Maradei and nine from Brianna Warren. Maya Trujillo had 21 assists and Niespodzinski finished with 28 digs. Maradei had six blocks and Kyla Green put down five.

On Saturday afternoon the Trojans traveled to Lamar, Colorado to wrap up region play against the Lopes from LCC. Each match was tight, but the home team was able to pull out the three-set victory by scores of 18-25, 21-25 and 20-25.

The Trojans (10-18) will host ASU JV on Tuesday night in Scott Gym at 7pm for the final home match of the year. They will then travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming for the Region IX tournament in which they will face the third seed out of the north conference in a first-round playoff game. The Region IX tournament will be the week of October 29.

Women’s soccer wraps season with playoff loss

Soccer

Things didn’t end as planned for the Lady Trojan soccer team this weekend as they fell to Sheridan College at Central Park in Trinidad. The Trojans, the second seed in the south, hosted the Generals, the third seed from the north in a cross-division match. The lower seed pulled off the upset and will head to Denver this weekend for the final four. It was a bad weekend for all of the south soccer teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions as all of the south teams were eliminated.

The Trojans had a great year, despite fighting through injuries which forced them to play most of the season with very few substitutions available. They are an extremely young team, losing only three sophomores to graduation. All three of those players will be greatly missed and hard to replace next year. Captain Bailee Fowler, Corina Enriquez and Thayla Grigorio will be moving on, but a very good class will remain to prepare to continue moving up the ranks of Region IX next season.
