Trojan Shield Weekly Update: October 8, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Trojan fans

There are many times throughout the year that it feels like the entire athletic department is running around with their hair on fire. We get busy and have teams going in all directions, but rarely do we have all of the teams in action at the same time. That will happen this week as every Trojan team will be in one form of competition or another. And, to make it even more challenging, almost all of those contests are on the road. It makes me appreciate the people that help us with our travel situations. The bus drivers and people from TSJC Maintenance that keep us moving. It also makes me appreciate the job our coaches do, not just preparing for battle on the field, but in planning all of these trips, meals, and hotels.

This past weekend was exciting as well with soccer picking up a pair of wins at Los Niños on Saturday and then volleyball hosting an energetic contest with Lamar that evening. The crowd was into the game, and there was pink everywhere as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. We would like to thank Mount San Rafael Hospital for donating some of the “pink” giveaway items for the night.

Volleyball drops a pair of Region IX contests

Pink Game

The Lady Trojans faced off with Otero and Lamar this week to wrap up the first round of Region IX play, dropping a pair of close contests. They fell to Otero 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19 on the road and to Lamar 25-19, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-19 at Scott Gym.

The Trojans will face Adams State JV at home on Tuesday night at 7pm. They will then make a weekend swing to the conference schools from the north, starting with McCook on Thursday, #19 Northeastern on Friday and Western Nebraska on Saturday. They will wrap up their home schedule on October 16 when they host #20 Otero for sophomore day.

Women’s soccer wins a pair

Women's Soccer

The Lady Trojan soccer team was not in region play this weekend as they faced Neosho County on Saturday and Garden City on Sunday, picking up a pair of wins to move to 6-5 on the season. Despite only heading into each contest with 12 athletes in uniform, the team performed valiantly in both contests.

TSJC took an early lead at home on Saturday afternoon on a goal from Reina Sotelo, but found themselves trailing 2-1 at the half after a pair of late Panther goals. Two beautiful goals on free kicks, one from the top of the box and the other from about 30 yards out, by Corina Enriquez moved the Trojans in front to stay. The final score was 3-2. On Sunday, the Trojans traveled to face Garden City. The conditions for the game were cold and wet, but that didn’t stop TSJC from getting a pair of goals from Madison Kaminky to claim the 2-0 win.

Trinidad will travel to face Otero on Saturday at 7pm. A win by the Trojans would mean first place in the south and a home playoff game the following weekend. A loss could mean second or third depending on the result of the Northeastern/Western Nebraska game on Wednesday. A second-place finish would mean a home playoff game as well, but third place means traveling to Wyoming for a playoff game.

Men’s soccer continues region struggles

Soccer kick

The Trojan men’s soccer team waited one game too long to wake up from their goal scoring slumber. TSJC needed a win on Friday afternoon against Central CC to secure a spot in the post season tournament, but fell short by a score of 4-0. The following afternoon against Neosho County a different Trojan team seemed to take the field as they took a 2-0 lead over the Panthers and held on for the 2-1 win. Hakim Williams had both goals in the contest. On Sunday, Williams added three more to his total as the Trojans topped Garden City 4-2. Williams assisted Ronaldo Watson on the fourth goal.

The team will then play their final match of the season when they travel to La Junta on Saturday at 5pm to face Otero.
