Trojan Shield Weekly Update: September 24, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Trojan Softball

It was a good week on the field/court for us, winning more than we lost, and it was also a good week for TSJC Athletics on social media. All of our accounts were very busy, with good traffic and information being shared. It was a reminder to me to let everyone know about the department’s social media accounts. We post on four platforms on a very regular basis. The Facebook page reached 1500 followers this weekend, the Twitter feed has almost 1100 followers, the Instagram page reached 500 followers yesterday. We also have a new Snapchat account that is quickly growing and already has over 100 friends. To follow TSJC Athletics on social media you can visit these accounts –

The Trojan softball team scrimmaged with Air Force on Saturday, and then on Sunday morning were back on the field to do some teaching. The Trojans instructed a pair of camps for area girls. The morning camp was for younger campers and the high school students attended the afternoon session. It is great to see our athletes interacting with the area youth, especially when they are able to share their sport. Thanks to Coach Swazo and the Lady Trojans. #TrojanProud

Cross Country teams draw national rankings

Cross Country Race

Earlier this week the first cross country team rankings of the 2018 season from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) were released. Both Trojan teams were high in the polls after two strong performances so far this season.

The women's Cross Country squad is ranked #11 in the poll, tied with Mesa Community College. Iowa Central is ranked number one. In the men’s ranking the Trojans are in the top ten in the number eight spot. Central Arizona is currently in first.

Update on the teams

men's soccer

All of our regular season matchups this week were on the road and were out of Region IX play. The volleyball team took part in the annual Wyo-Braksa Tournament in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. The Trojans faced Eastern Wyoming in the first game, avenging a loss in the first game of the season with a five-set win over the Lancers. TSJC won by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-11. Later on Friday afternoon, the Trojans defeated Dawson Community College by scores of 25-12, 25-22, 18-25, 24-26, 15-10. On Saturday, TSJC’s six game winning streak was ended by Laramie County by scores of 18-25, 14-25, 9-25. They Lady Trojans are now 8-9 on the season. They will travel to Alamosa on Tuesday for a match with ASU JV prior to starting Region IX play next weekend when they host McCook, NJC and Western Nebraska on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The soccer teams headed to Rock Springs, Wyoming for non-division matches with Western Wyoming Community College. The Lady Trojans missed a few shots early and ended up falling 3-0 to the Mustangs. The men got things going early with a goal from Jahleel Cunningham. The Mustangs would tie it minutes later on a penalty kick. On the play Trojan goalkeeper Shamar Jemison received a red card so the Trojans would play the next 65 minutes down a player. The disadvantage didn’t slow the Trojans as they scored late to reclaim the lead. Kelton Boyd picked up the goal which would be the game winner as TSJC held on for the 2-1 win. The Trojan teams return to region play this weekend with key matchups in Scottsbluff and Sterling.
