Trojan Shield Weekly Update: September 17, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Trojan Volleyball

We are past the initial excitement of the semester and have settled into the weekly grind of classes, practices and games. This was the first week of the semester that really seemed to have a lower energy flow to it. Many of the coaches have been checking grades and are stepping up the study halls for the athletes. Our Head Athletic Trainer, Desiree Moreno, has been extremely busy dealing with nagging injuries and sore muscles. This really seems to be the time that tests our metal. The time to see if we will have what it takes to make it through the semester and find success in the classroom and on the field. It is easy to find excitement and momentum early, but weeks like this one will really test the stamina of our coaches and athletes. The leadership of the coaches is strong, they will take the athletes through the tough times. That is how champions are made.

sofball bus

One thing that happened this week that deserves special mention. The Lamar softball bus broke down in Walsenburg on their way to Alamosa on Friday evening. They requested help from Coach Swazo and he agreed to pick them up on the way to Alamosa the following morning. It was a crowded bus ride, but it was great to be able to help out a fellow school. Lamar got their bus repaired and the rest of the weekend went off without a hitch. I think it is great that our coaches are so well respected in the area that the other colleges will reach out to them for help. It says a great deal about our coaching staff. #TrojanProud

Volleyball hosts Alumni

Volleyball

The Trojan Volleyball team hosted their annual alumni scrimmage in Scott Gym this past Saturday. The current TSJC team played a match with the alumni, before the teams combined to play a few extra sets for fun. It was an entertaining morning that everyone seemed to enjoy. The past and current Lady Trojans then had a meal together to get to know each other. Returning this year as alumni were Jillian Wilkins, Stephanie Hunnel, Diahanna Trujillo, Amberlee Velasquez, Alyssa Thompson, Alyssa Suazo, Kaitlyn Smith, Jacinta Shoop, Dorain Ray, Vanessa Gonzales and Deidre Dimino.

The Trojans also picked up another win earlier in the week when they went to Garden City, Kansas and defeated the Broncbusters in straight sets. Brianna Warren (12 kills), Trinity Good (10 kills/14 digs) and Paola Maradei Mejia (10 kills/six blocks) keyed the Trojan attack. This week the Trojans will travel to the Wyo-Braksa Tournament in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. They will face Eastern Wyoming, Laramie County and Dawson CC on Friday and Saturday.

Women’s Soccer defeats Otero

women's soccer

The Lady Trojan soccer team moved into a three-way tie for first in the Region IX standings with a 2-1 win over Otero at home on Wednesday. The Trojans got an early goal from Jade Glasser off an assist from Wendy De Loera to head into the half up 1-0. They doubled the lead in the 53rd minute when Bailee Fowler headed the ball in off a corner kick from Ashlee Minne. The Rattlers got back into it a minute later on an unassisted goal from Raven Bernier. It looked like the Trojans added to the lead late but an offside call wiped a third Trojan goal off the board. Otero controlled the momentum late and had the fans holding their breath, but the TSJC defense stood tall and the game finished 2-1. Goalkeeper Cambri Curtis recorded seven saves in the contest.

The win moved the Lady Trojans into a three-way tie for first with Otero and Western Nebraska. All three teams are now 2-1 in region play. TSJC will step out of conference play this weekend when they head to Rock Springs, Wyoming to face Western Wyoming Community College on Saturday afternoon.

Men’s Soccer winless in region play

men's soccer

The men’s soccer team struggled at home dropping their game on Wednesday to Otero 2-0. It was three straight home contests that saw the team unable to the find the back of the net. They got the goals going on Friday in Columbus, Nebraska but fell to Central CC 4-3 in Overtime.

The Trojans will be out of league play this weekend as they travel to Rock Springs, Wyoming to face Western Wyoming Community College on Saturday afternoon. The following weekend will be a big one for the team if they are going to get a playoff spot as they travel to face Northeastern and Western Nebraska.

Quote of the Week -

"Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character." - Alan Armstrong
