Trojan Shield Weekly Update: September 3, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Trojans 2018

I tend to focus on the high-points, the victories, whether on the field or in the classroom. We have had such great success over the past few years that it can be easy to forget there are many times the ball bounces the wrong way. This week was a bit of an awakening as not only did we struggle on the field, but we had other issues away from the field as well. I could not remember an 0-8 weekend for the Trojan athletic teams, but that is what we experienced last weekend. All of the games were on the road against good competition, but to not win a contest was difficult. This followed up a week that already had us experiencing heartache as one of our athletes dealt with the tragic loss of a parent. At times it felt like a dark cloud was surrounding us. But we will come out of it, and we will use the experiences to make us stronger. As I watched our students and coaches stand by each other it is a great reminder of the strength we have here at Trinidad State and in the local communities. We will be come back stronger from this week.

On a lighter note, we are well into the fall seasons and we will finally get to see some home games. This will be a busy weekend as the Soccer and Volleyball teams will play a combined seven home contests. On the other side of the hill the Cross Country team will lace up their running shoes for the first time this season as they compete in the Joe Vigil Open in Alamosa. They will be running against the top two teams in the NCAA Division II so it should be interesting to see how the Trojans do. I’m looking forward to a new week.

Trojans participate in Labor Day events

clean up crew

The Labor Day holiday is a busy one in the Trinidad area. The rodeo, dance and of course the parade keep the town festive all weekend long. The Trojan athletes have found multiple ways to participate in these events over the years. This year all of the Trojan athletes from the Trinidad Campus along with their coaches, one of the buses and Titus the Trojan took part in the Labor Day Parade. This has become an annual event for the department and it is a lot of fun to see the athletes hand candy out to the children as we make our way through town.

Also this year, the Trojan softball team helped with a couple of activities. They cleaned up on Sunday morning after the dance, and then showed up to watch the rodeo, and stuck around to clean the grandstand afterwards. I am proud of the athletes and staff for the activities they are doing with the community this year.
