Trojan Shield Weekly Update: August 20, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

volleyball 2018

On Thursday the students began moving into the halls in Trinidad, and over at the Valley Campus all of the freshmen were welcomed to orientation. I had the opportunity to go over and meet with a majority of the cross country athletes that evening. In three short years that program has grown from a handful of student-athletes to a large group that fills up a room. This year’s team returns a great deal of talent and has some intriguing freshmen. It will be exciting to see what they do at the Joe Vigil meet in Alamosa on September 8. It is going to be strong competition from Adams and Western State, but the Trojans are ready to hold their own.

Freshman orientation was held in Trinidad on Friday. I had the chance to speak to quite a few parents throughout the day. Many of them commented on how helpful the people in the community have been to them, mentioning great service they had received at restaurants and hotels. It made me proud of our town.

Finally, I’d like to give a special thank you to a few people that really aided our athletic program this week. Roger Lujan puts tons of miles in the driver seat of our buses. The coaches really appreciate him and the athletes love him. He is a huge assent to our department. Matt Young took time out of his day on Friday to get us some fantastic photos of the volleyball team. Ira Williamson made a last-minute repair to the scoreboards to have them ready for Saturday and Doug Bak came in early on Saturday morning to help get the video stream working properly. On that note, the new address for our video stream will be - https://www.tsjctrojans.com/information/TrojanTV

Scrimmages this past week

scrimmage

The fall preseason comes to an end this weekend. The volleyball and soccer teams have looked good early and are hopefully healthy as they head into their season openers on Wednesday. All three teams open on the road this week as the volleyball team will be in Cheyenne, Wyoming for a pair of matches with Region IX North teams Laramie County and Eastern Wyoming. The soccer teams will be in Kansas for a pair of games with Dodge City Community College. We will have our first home contest of the fall on Saturday when the Lady Trojan soccer team hosts Hutchinson Community College at Los Niños Park at noon.

All of the preseason scrimmages were well played and the teams held their own against primarily NCAA Division II teams. The soccer teams faced Adams State this week and looked very impressive. The women then went to New Mexico Highlands and struggled a bit against the Cowgirls before lightning shortened the contest. The volleyball team had strong moments against Highlands, UCCS and Otero in the scrimmage they hosted on Saturday.

Softball host 12th Annual Alumni Scrimmage

2017 scrimmage

Coach Swazo will welcome a large group of former players back for the 12th annual alumni scrimmage on Saturday at Southside Park. Between 15-20 former Lady Trojans will return to take on this year’s team in their first scrimmage action of the fall. This year’s event will have special meaning as we honor former Trojan Christy Bruno-Watts who passed away recently.

The alumni scrimmage is always entertaining so please make plans to attend for a fun time.
