Trojan Shield Weekly Update: July 23, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Reunion Group

The smell of the freshly finished floor in Scott Gym is a certain reminder that summer is moving very quickly and before long the students will return to campus to start the 2018-19 campaign. I would like to thank Al Malespini and everyone else that worked on the floor this past week. It looks great and is ready for the nearly 100 games that will be played on it in the next 12 months.

Last year I challenged the student-athletes and the coaching staffs to #StriveForExcellence in everything they did. This year the message to them will be slightly different. I will give everyone a sneak peek at the new message in next week’s Trojan Shield.

Summer Camp Schedule

  • June 5-8 – Boys Basketball Camp (completed)
  • June 20-22 – Girls Basketball Camp (completed)
  • August 7-9 – Volleyball Camp

Members of the Classes of ‘71, ‘72 and ‘73 Gather at TSJC

Reunion

The Trinidad State classes of '71, '72 and '73 held a reunion on the Trinidad campus this past week. It was great to visit with them as they toured Scott Gym. They had countless stories of their time in Trinidad, and it was especially intriguing for me as many of them were athletes during their time at TSJC. Among the former Trojans was the all-time single game scoring leader in TSJC basketball history, Tim Harris. In 1972 Tim scored 50 points against Frank Phillips breaking NBA Hall-of-Famer Spencer Haywood’s record of 49. Harris had 21 field goals and eight free throws in the contest. TSJC won the game 103-82. He and his classmates discussed the achievement, noting which basket the final point was scored on, and that there was no 3-point line and no dunking allowed at the time.

All of these folks have led extremely successful lives, and Trinidad State played a part in that. It was a great reminder to all of us here what an influence we can have on these young lives and how important it is that we do our best every day.

Men’s Basketball releases 2018-19 schedule

Basketball coaches

Trinidad State finished the 2017-18 season with their best record in over 20 years, and a trip to the final four of Region IX. This season Coach Michael Folda, assistant Chauncey Russel and the Trojan team will try to improve on that impressive record. Folda is entering his ninth season leading the Trojan Basketball team. He recently released the 2018-19 basketball schedule. This year it will be a young TSJC team taking the floor for Folda, as graduation took a toll, including sending three Trojans to NCAA Division I schools.

Trinidad will play 28 games this year with 12 of those coming at home. The south conference of Region IX will remain similar this season with the Trojans facing Otero, Lamar, Western Nebraska, McCook, North Platte and Northeastern. Gone from the south are Eastern Wyoming and LCCC.

Key match-ups on the schedule include the home opener with Frank Phillips on November 9, a road game with Indian Hills after Thanksgiving and the final regular season game of the year, a home contest with Otero Junior College in February.
