Trojan Shield Weekly Update: July 16, 2018

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Parade shot

The heat of July has settled in, but in the athletic department we have not slowed down to enjoy it. We are exactly a month away from our first fall scrimmages and 38 days away from our first official soccer and volleyball competitions of 2018. If that doesn’t make it seem real enough, in three weeks we will already have over 60 athletes on campus. It won’t be long and the athletes will be marching through the streets of Trinidad in the Labor Day Parade.

Our search for assistant coaches for the 2018-2019 season is wrapping up. We have coaches in place for most of the sports with Baseball and Soccer conducting final interviews this week. These assistant coaches are vital to the success we have had over the past couple of seasons. I am excited by the ones that are returning and can’t wait to meet the new ones.

Coach Steve Swazo was recently asked by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association to speak at their 74th annual coach’s clinic at the end of July. He will be speaking about building culture in a program and motivating student athletes. Coach Swazo has had great success with the athletes he has recruited out of New Mexico and we are excited for him to have the chance to speak to the coaching association. Finally, I have to give a shout out to coach Peter Freeman. He predicted France would win the world cup and he was spot on. Glad our soccer coach has such a great knowledge of the game at all levels!

Women’s Basketball releases 2018-19 schedule

Basketball huddle

Coach Rich Holden enters his 27th year at Trinidad State Junior College and his ninth leading the Lady Trojan Basketball team. He recently released the 2018-19 basketball schedule. With changes in the way the region shapes up, the schedule is a bit different than in years past. Holden has put together a great schedule for this seasons squad. They will play 30 games with 12 of those coming at home. They will play conference games with Otero, Lamar, Western Nebraska, McCook and Northeastern. They will also see a few region teams in non-conference play including Eastern Wyoming, Western Wyoming, Laramie County and Casper.

Following consecutive trips to the region tournament, look for a young but talented squad on the floor for Holden. Key match-ups early include the home opener with ASU JV on November 6 and a home contest with 2018 NJCAA Tournament qualifier Casper College on November 28.
