Greetings from Trojan Country!

Scott Award

We had a great night on Tuesday for the 2019 Athletic Banquet. The coaches took turns telling about their seasons and praising the effort of the student-athletes. It was also a great opportunity to thank our boosters for their support and the faculty, staff and administration for all that they do for us every year. We also had the chance to honor the academic success of our student-athletes as the coaches spoke of academic excellence. I was able to give the George Scott award. Each year this award is given to the top academic sophomore athletes. It was my privilege to award a pair of Scott awards this year to a pair of excellent students. Earning the Scott Award this year were baseball player Jess Pratt and basketball player Hannah Gilmore. Each of them are 4.0 students and team leaders. Congratulations to Hannah and Jess.

Also, this week, our volleyball and softball teams did some community service as they volunteered to be a part of the Trinidad Community Foundation’s annual COMCAST Cares spring cleanup. Thank you to the coaches and athletes for taking part of this event, and thank you to the TCF for the work they do to keep Trinidad beautiful.

Softball heads to Region IX Tournament

Teddi Garcia

The Lady Trojans took the week off to prepare for the upcoming Region IX tournament as the rest of the conference teams wrapped up play. When the dust finally settled on Saturday afternoon the Trojans were the third overall seed, joining Western Nebraska, Otero and McCook in the double elimination tournament. TSJC will face Otero at 2pm on Thursday afternoon in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Western will host McCook in the other first round game. The first-round winners will then square off at 6pm that evening. The losers of the opening round matchups will then play each other at 8pm in the first elimination game of the tournament. Play will continue on Friday with a pair of games (an “if needed” game will be played on Saturday) until a Region IX Champion is crowned.

The Trojans head into the post season with a 24-25 overall record and they are 15-15 in region play. TSJC split their regular season games with Otero and WNCC, but dropped the season series to McCook 4-2. They have hit .309 this season with 57 home runs and they scored 316 runs. Sheyanne Sandoval led the way offensively with a .485 average and 13 home runs. Pitching wise, Teddi Garcia set the TSJC career strikeout record with 299 so far. This year she had 144 K’s with a 3.93 ERA. Freshman Gabryella Williams led the team with a 2.86 ERA. Garcia was 15-9 on the season and is two wins away from the TSJC career wins record.

Baseball claims the Empire Conference Crown

Baseballs

The baseball team did just enough on the road this week to defend their Empire Conference Crown. TSJC defeated Northeastern 7-3 on Thursday for their 22nd league win of the season. That win coupled with other happenings in the region, left the Trojans on top of the standings when the dust cleared.

The Trojans will host the Region IX Tournament this week. As of writing this NJC and McCook still have a game to be played on Monday afternoon. We will have tournament information coming out as soon as it becomes available.
