Trojan Shield Weekly Update: April 29, 2019

Greetings from Trojan Country!

last year's dinner

It was a good weekend for the Trojan teams as both baseball and softball played their way into their respective playoff competitions. Softball will get a slight break before heading to Scottsbluff, Nebraska for the Region IX Softball Tournament and a chance to claim their third straight title. Baseball has a bit left to do. The Trojans have three games with Northeastern remaining, but some of the teams in the conference still have six to seven games remaining. Whoever manages to get hot down the stretch will get to host the finals, but at least at this point we know the Trojans have a spot at the table.

I mentioned last week that the annual athletic banquet will be held on Tuesday evening. It has turned into a fun tradition. One of the things I get to do at the banquet each year is hand out the George Scott Award. The Scott award is given to the highest achieving student-athletes in the classroom. This year I will have the honor of giving a pair of these awards to a pair of well deserving, and very hard-working sophomores. You’ll have to check in next week to see who received the award.

Softball clinches playoff spot

The Lady Trojans went into the final weekend of the season needing a split to ensure a spot in the upcoming Region IX tournament and got just that, splitting doubleheaders with McCook on Friday and Lamar on Saturday.

The Trojans are done with the regular season. They finished with a 24-25 record and were 15-15 in conference play. There are a few teams wrapping up games early this week that will determine the final standings. Western Nebraska is a lock to host the tournament and Otero secured the number two spot. If McCook were to sweep WNCC on Monday then they would jump into third and the Trojans would be the fourth seed.

Baseball wins four of five

The baseball team had another busy week, with nine-inning games with Otero and Lamar midweek and then a three-game series in McCook over the weekend. TSJC was great on the road, winning all four, but fell in extra innings at home on Thursday to Lamar.

The week started well with a 16-5 win in six innings in La Junta. Bryan Meissner picked up the win in relief. TSJC swept the Rattlers 6-0 in the season series. On Thursday Lamar came to Trinidad. The Trojans led until the ninth but saw the Lopes tie it and send it into extra innings. In the eleventh a series of errors allowed five runs across and the Trojans fell 13-8. Over the weekend TSJC swept a series in McCook, Nebraska, defeating the Indians 3-1, 5-3 and 10-0.

The Trojans slid percentage points behind the Lopes in the standings after Thursday’s loss, but responded over the weekend to secure a spot in the playoffs. They will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series in Sterling, Colorado this week against Northeastern JC. They are expecting bad weather in Sterling early in the week, so those game times are up in the air at this point.
