Trojan Shield Weekly Update: April 1, 2019
Greetings from Trojan Country!
March comes to an end and we roll into the final stretch of another academic year. April is a very busy month for the athletic department and this week should prove to be an excellent example of that. Softball and Baseball will both play crucial home contests and then on Saturday night we will have the annual Fun and Friendraiser event at Brix. The TSJC Educational Foundation always does an amazing job with the event and we are very excited that the proceeds will go to help the athletic department this year. It is going to be a fun evening. Also, I would like to encourage everyone to go visit the TSJC Educational Foundation’s Facebook page to take part in the online auction.
This past week the students and coaches got together to honor our Athletic Trainer Desi Moreno. March is National Athletic Training Month, and the work Desi does with our athletes is a great example of the important role athletic trainers play in athletic programs around the country. Desi is loved by our athletes and most of them gathered this week to sign a photo for her. We really appreciate you Desi! #TrojanProud
Finally, this week, the TSJC Volleyball team has been conducting a FanCloth fundraiser over the past few weeks. It has been extremely popular so Coach Melissa Hardman decided to extend the deadline for another week. Go to this link to see the great Trojan items for sale from the volleyball team.

Vigil and Gilmore named All-Region
A pair of Lady Trojans were recently named to the All Region IX women’s basketball team. Point guard Destinee Vigil was named to the South All-Region team and post Hannah Gilmore was named to the South All-Defensive team. Each were sophomores for the Lady Trojans.
Vigil, from Belen, New Mexico, averaged 12.3 points per game to lead TSJC this past season. She also had an extremely impressive assist to turnover ratio of 1.6 during her career at Trinidad. Destinee will continue her education and playing career in Alamosa next year as a member of the ASU Grizzlies.
Gilmore came to TSJC from Cedaredge, Colorado. She averaged just under ten points a game this past season and led the team with 8.4 rebounds per contest. Hannah is a 4.0 student and has also received many academic awards during her stay at TSJC.
Vigil signs at Adams State
As I already mentioned, this was a big week for Destinee Vigil. The Trojan point guard signed with Adams State earlier this week. Destinee was a highly sought-after prospect and a big signee for the Grizzles.
Vigil averaged 10.2 points per game on 41.1% shooting during her two-year career at TSJC. She shot and impressive 35.5% from three-point range this past season, connecting 56 times from behind the line. In 2018-2019 she dished out 96 assists, pulled down 114 rebounds and had 42 steals.
According to the Adams State Website - "Destinee brings energy, communication, and leadership for 40 minutes. She is ultra-competitive and we are looking forward to that competitiveness and energy to pour into our practices, locker room, and on gameday," Coach Jaime Green said. "Destinee takes great pride in her defense and is consistent scoring off the bounce or from deep. We are excited to have this young lady as a Grizzly for the next two years."
Destinee plans to major in Exercise Science at Adams State this upcoming fall. Congratulations Dest #TrojanProud
Niespodzinski joins Tigers
Trinidad State Volleyball player Heloisa Niespodzinski recently signed to play next season with the Tigers of the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Alabama. Helo was a Libero/Defensive Specialist from Sao Bento Do Sul, Brazil. She played in 29 matches this past season for the Trojans, finishing up with 545 digs and 18 service aces.
The Tigers were 22-10 this past season in the Gulf South Conference of NCAA Division II. Niespodzinski is the first new player to join the University of West Alabama program this off season as they look to build off of their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history this past year. Congratulations Helo #TrojanProud
Bohn signs at Ottawa
TSJC Softball player Avery Bohn recently signed to play next season with the Spirit of Ottawa University in Surprise, Arizona. Bohn is hitting .286 her sophomore season with 12 RBI’s and a home run. She normally plays first base, but has pitched in nine games with a 2-2 record.
Avery came to TSJC from Broomfield High School in Erie, Colorado. She will join a Spirit team that is 12-21 so far this season playing in the Golden State Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Congratulations Bo #TrojanProud
