We welcome all of the students back from spring break this Monday. We are also looking forward to an assortment of exciting events on the calendar in the month of April. The Educational Foundation Fun and Friendraiser event is less than two weeks away and our athletic banquet is coming up in the final week of April. The spring sports are near their midpoints and all of the games come with a little added excitement this time of year. If you attended any of the region games with McCook over the weekend you can tell that each game is important to the overall standings. It was a fun weekend to be a sports fan, and there is still more to come in the next month and a half.

One cool thing that happened this past week, the CSU Rams softball team stopped in Trinidad to get in a quick practice on their way to New Mexico. It gave Coach Swazo and the team a chance to catch up with former Trojan Isabella Navarro. Navarro, now in her senior season, is starting for the Rams at second base. CSU is 23-4 and just missed being in the NCAA top-25 this past week.

I would like to say an extra “Thank you” to everyone who helped with feeding the athletes this week. We had many people bring food by for the athletes and trust me when I say they greatly appreciate it.

Baseball takes series with McCook

The Trojan baseball team maintained their hold on first place of Region IX this week with a tight series win over McCook Community College at Central Park. The Trojans dropped game one 2-1 before bouncing back and winning the next two games 8-3 and 9-8.

Anthony Durbano pitched well in game one, despite the start being moved back a few hours due to rain and then a lighting delay in the third inning. The Trojan sophomore went 8 2/3’s innings giving up only a pair of runs while striking out six. He was bested in the game, however by McCook’s Isaac Vargas who struck out 15 Trojan hitters in eight innings. TSJC managed only one run, Cody Beck scoring on an RBI single from Ivan Arce, as they fell 2-1.

Game two of the series on Saturday afternoon went in the Trojans favor. Elvin Cordero went the distance on the hill to pick up his second win of the season. He struck out nine while only allowing six hits. The Trojans got a pair of home runs from Reid Baty and extra base hits from Ethan Hammond and Kevin Gutierrez to bring around eight runs for the 8-3 win.

In the series deciding game the Indians got a huge five run sixth inning to jump up 8-1. TSJC rallied in their final at bat, scoring seven, capped off by a 2-run Gutierrez home run, to force the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth TSJC loaded the bases and then Jose Macias drew a walk on four straight pitches to bring Baty across for the winning run. Macias also homered in the contest and Arce had a pair of doubles. Sebastion Olivo struck out five in three innings of relief to pick up the win.

TSJC (15-13, 9-3) will travel to Lamar CC (10-12, 7-5) early in the week for a single game, and will then travel all the way to Beatrice, Nebraska to take on Southeast CC over the weekend.

Softball splits in La Junta

The Trojan softball team headed to La Junta, Colorado on Tuesday to face region foe Otero for a doubleheader. The Trojans narrowly fell in the first game, losing 8-7 in extra innings, and then bounced back to take game two 4-1.

In the first contest the Trojans got a great pitching performance from Teddi Garcia, who struck out five while only allowing five earned runs, but fell in extra innings on a walk off single from the Rattlers. Sheyanne Sandoval had a home run in the contest and three RBI’s. In game two Avellaka Arviso took to the circle and shut down the Rattlers. She held Otero to one run while striking out a pair in seven innings work. A triple off the bat of Jelaeni Kapanui was the only extra base hit for the Trojans who got RBI’s from Rachel McKinley, Jordan Sanchez, Aspen Dufour and Megan Reidhead. TSJC claimed the 4-1 win.

Softball drops home series with McCook

This past weekend the Trojans faced off with the Indians from McCook Community College for a pair of doubleheaders at Southside Park. TSJC outscored the Indians 36-28 in the series but dropped three of the four contests.

On Saturday, the Trojans destroyed the visitors in the first game 15-1. Teddi Garcia got the win in the circle, and she got plenty of help in the form of RBI’s from Sheyanne Sandoval (3), Meghan Gonzalez, Avellaka Arviso, Camryn Mileta, Aspen Dufour (3) and Avery Bohn. In the second game the bats went silent. The Trojans only managed to bring one run across, falling 5-1.

On Sunday afternoon the Trojans had chances in both games, but errors in both contests set up big innings for the Indians who came away with a pair of one-run victories. Despite three home runs from Sandoval and one from Rachel McKinley the Trojans fell 8-7 in game one. A similar situation in game two with more bombs from Sandoval, Jelaeni Kapanui and Aspen Dufour but they fell 14-13.

TSJC (13-18, 4-8) will host Northeastern Junior College on Saturday for a doubleheader. The games at Southside this weekend are set for a first pitch at 1pm.
