Trojan Shield Weekly Update: February 18, 2019

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Softball team

A busy week lay ahead for the Trojan athletic teams, hopefully…

With the predicted bad weather coming into the area, it is putting a damper on the plans of the outdoor teams this week. Baseball was supposed to host their home opener on Tuesday with Luna Community College. That game is already moved to Wednesday, and may not happen depending on total snowfall this week. The weekend games, Softball hosting Luna and Baseball hosting Southeast College are also in doubt. Hope for warmer than predicted weather!

The Basketball teams should be able to get their games in as they host Northeastern on Friday night and WNCC on Saturday afternoon. These are really good teams, at the top of the region standings, so please make plans to come cheer the Trojans on to victory. Hopefully it will be four good games.

Runners

The Trojan track team headed up the road to Gunnison, Colorado this past weekend for the Western Alumni Meet. Trinidad got good showings from many of the athletes as they attempted to establish high marks heading into the National Meet in a couple of weeks.

Benadine Chelimo led the way for the Trojan women with a second-place finish in the 800m, and a 2:21.66 altitude converted time. She has qualified for nationals in the 800m, mile, 3000m and 5000m. Toni Moore is also qualified in the 800m, the mile and the 3000m. She ran an 11:38.44 in the 3000m this weekend, placing third. Camille Ruggles ran her best 3000m of the season, finishing fourth with a time of 11:28.64.

The men improved their qualifying time in the distance medley, finishing second at a converted time of 10:19.44. Godfrey Chama and Derek Holdsworth are each qualified in multiple events and are currently ranked first and second in the 800m and fourth and fifth in the 600m.

The Trojans will be headed to Pittsburg, Kansas on March 1 and 2 for the 2019 Indoor National Meet.

Softball goes 3-1 on the week

Sandoval Swing

The softball team is picking up momentum as they continue to prepare for Region IX play starting in March. The team went 3-1 this week to improve their overall record to 6-5 on the season. They have won five of the last six games played.

The first doubleheader was in Clarendon, Texas on Thursday. The Trojans took game one 9-4 before falling in the second 6-0. Teddi Garcia got the “W” in game one, surrendering just four runs on six hits. TSJC got home runs from Rachel McKinley and Sheyanne Sandoval, a triple from Jordan Sanchez and doubles from Harleigh Scott (2), Aspen Dufour, Tori Litwin (2).

On Saturday the Trojans played at Southside Park for the first time this season, and despite the cold, windy conditions they dominated for a pair of wins over Frank Phillips by scores of 10-4 and 14-3. Garcia again got the win in game one, her fourth of the season, striking out seven over seven innings. Gabryella Williams had a home run, Scott had a triple and McKinley, Meghan Gonzalez and Avellaka Arviso each had doubles. In game two the Trojans jumped out early, putting 14 runs up in the first two innings, and never looked back. TSJC got doubles from Scott, Miranda Medrano, Arviso (2), Sanchez, Jessica Arellano and Litwin. Williams picked up the win in the circle, throwing all five innings, giving up one hit while striking out five.

The Trojans will be home again this weekend as they face Luna CC on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Southside Park.
