Trojan Shield Weekly Update: February 4, 2019

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Softball scrimmage

It was a long, difficult week for the TSJC teams. They put many miles on the buses with teams playing in Phoenix, Boulder, Scottsbluff, Sterling and Lamar this week. Our only home contests, Softball’s games with Frank Phillips, were cancelled by the Plainswomen early in the week, so our Trojans just held a team scrimmage instead. A majority of the games we did play were against the top competition in the region and even the nation. Overall it was not a great week for wins and losses, but the teams fought hard against the conditions and I am very proud of them. This might have been the most difficult week of the spring, let’s hope the teams all bounce back strong this coming week.

I want to make note of the Baseball team. They have had less full practices than the teams they faced this weekend have had games, and yet they fought hard in every contest. Playing teams that come from a warm climate this early in the season is a daunting task, but they faced the challenge well and will be stronger down the stretch because of it. I have no doubt their trip to Arizona this weekend will be better.

Finally, I want to thank our women’s Basketball team. The ladies are in the most difficult point of their season, yet they took time this week to go over to Trinidad Middle School and help the young Miners build their basketball skills. They also went back the next night to cheer them on during one of their games. We have great student-athletes here at TSJC. #TrojanProud

Track and field compete at CU

by Kyle Masterson – The Trojan tracksters nabbed a number of national qualifying marks Saturday at the Colorado University Invitational in Boulder. Benadine Chelimo competed in the 5,000 meter run and posted a time of 19:06.79, earning 17th place. A host of Trojans competed in the men’s mile in which Godfrey Chama led the charge running 4:25.13. Bailey Smith, Joseph Enright, and Riley Allen finished close behind in 4:32, 4:35, and 4:39 respectively. Richard Sais ran the 800 meters in a time of 2:08.76. Toni Moore and Camille Ruggles capped off a good weekend for the TSJC track teams with strong performances in the 3,000 meters. Moore battled to finish in a national qualifying mark of 11:02.36, while Ruggles ran a personal best in 12:02.99.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend in Alamosa at the Adams State Invitational.

Trojans split games in Lamar

Calvo 3-pointer

The Trojan basketball teams started a long week of road games in Lamar, Colorado on Monday night as they squared off with Region IX foes Lamar Community College. TSJC led the way for the better part of both games with the women defeating the Lopes 84-37 and the men falling 80-78 in overtime.

In the women’s game the Trojans led almost from the opening tip as they outscored the Lopes 19-8 in the first quarter. Things did not get better for the hosts as TSJC built the lead out to 21 points by halftime. It was more of the same in the second half and the hot shooting from Linsi Calvo and the hustle play from Katie Rohr extended the lead to nearly fifty points by the final buzzer. Every Lady Trojan scored in the contest with Calvo leading the way for the Trojans with 17 points and eight steals. Hannah Gilmore also had a big game with eight points, ten rebounds and eight assists.

Trinidad was in front by a few points for a majority of the men’s game with Lamar. TSJC held a slight halftime lead, and had chances to put it away down the stretch, but the Trojans dismal 43% shooting performance from the foul line would allow the Lopes to tie it at the end of regulation. Lamar took the lead in overtime, and a late 3-pointer from the Trojans would go off the front of the rim. TSJC fell by two on the road. Keontae White led the way for TSJC with 18 points, and Bilal Shabazz recorded another double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Following this weekend’s road trip to Sterling and Scottsbluff, the road weary Trojan teams will get a bit of a break with just one home game apiece this week. They will host Lamar on Wednesday night. The women will tip off at 5pm followed by the men.

Quote of the Week -

"Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday." - Wilma Rudolph
