Trojan Shield Weekly Update: January 7, 2019

Greetings from Trojan Country!

Trojan on campus

We are off and running with a new semester at Trinidad State. The basketball teams are both back on campus, and the rest of the students are ready to arrive this weekend. The Athletic Department staff has been busy preparing for the upcoming semester. It should be an exciting time. We have the basketball and track teams in action throughout January and then the baseball and softball teams join the fray in early February.

Athletes achieve success in the classroom

Volleyball team

We stress academic achievement for all of our student-athletes at TSJC. The teams all hold study sessions and each of the coaches stresses the importance of keeping up with coursework despite the rigorous schedule required of all of the athletes. The hard work has paid dividends over the years with great success in the classroom, and this past semester was no exception. Of our 147 athletes, we had 56 finish with a GPA over 3.5 and a total departmental GPA at around a 3.1. We had 19 students finish the semester with a perfect 4.0.

The teams get into the act competing with each other as well. This semester we had an amazing competition for the top spot with three teams finishing over a 3.37 GPA. The battle was close between softball, women’s basketball and volleyball, but in the end the volleyball team won out with a team GPA at 3.58. Women’s soccer was slightly lower than these three overall, but held the record for most students at a 4.0 as six of the freshman soccer players all recorded perfect marks.

I am proud of the effort that the students put in throughout the first semester and know I echo the sentiment of the coaches when I say we are not going to be satisfied with these grades and are going to continue to push to become one of the top academic programs in the nation.

Pair of Trojans sign with Park University Gilbert

Softball signees

A pair of Lady Trojan Softball players have committed to move on next year, signing with Park University Gilbert. Gabby Gonzales and Harleigh Scott committed to the Buccaneers for their inaugural season in 2019-20. Both Gonzales and Scott originally came to TSJC from Winslow, Arizona.

Gonzales is a left-handed catcher. She played in 51 games during the Trojans Region IX championship run last season, hitting six home runs while driving in 40 RBIs. She hit .382. Scott is a freshman at TSJC and will see her first action when the Trojans take the field in February. She is an outfielder.

The Lady Trojans will open their 2019 season in less than one month. They host Frank Phillips for a doubleheader on February 2 with the first pitch set for noon.

New signings this week

Our coaches were hard at work in December signing athletes for next year. We had a number of new Trojans commit to play at TSJC in 2019-20. This week’s new signees include – for Baseball, Uziel Santos Rodríguez from Cidra, Puerto Rico, for Softball, Marissa Reyes from Carlsbad, New Mexico, and for volleyball, Julieanna Ramos from San Antonio, Texas, Sofia Moreno Bendala from Vaciamadrid, Spain and Michaela Rae Coronado from Phoenix, Arizona.
